Adopted / Foster Children

The organization Children’s Rights recently came to my attention. Reading about their work triggered many old memories about my experiences with “the system.” It also brought home to me that, as a result of my childhood and adult traumas, I have created a safe space to ‘hide out’ and work quietly behind the scenes in my private practice with families and children.  As a result of my own growth and development I take my next shaky steps.

I would have been one of the children caught in the Child Welfare System if it had been made known what was going on in our household. At a conference, I remember sharing with Child Welfare Administrators and a Judge that after the experiences I had as a worker in the Child Welfare System, as a foster parent, and as a counselor I would rather have lived through what I lived through in my family than have dealt with the terror and trauma that would surely have come with an “intervention.”

Not one of these Child Welfare professionals visited with me in depth or asked for my perspective and what I thought would be helpful? Not one.
